WHO IS IYE ECHA?
Who is Iye Echa? Iye Echa is a multi-instrumentalist born in Nigeria. His first musical instrument according to him was his mouth with which he whistled his way in and around the house to the amusement of a neighbour who likened him to a bird. Later on as a young boy, he was fascinated by the polyphonic sounds he heard the children around him play with the drums and he joined in. "We normally played with anything, from spoons to forks and sometimes too we made our own drums with empty milk tins, a polythene bag and a tube. Music was all around me but I never considered being a professional musician even though I played percussion for my church throughout my teenage years.” Iye would later fall in love with the guitar during his late teens and practice for hours to improve his technique. It was when he first heard Kirk Whalum that he decided to play the saxophone. ‘When I went to buy a saxophone, I met a man at the shop and he convinced me to start with the clarinet. I grudgingly bought the clarinet and I took lessons with Jeff Judge (a teacher in Hilton, South Africa).” He also devoted a lot of time practicing for hours until he became good. Two years later he would buy himself a saxophone and practice for hours. Iye was the leader of a fusion band in Pietermaritzburg South Africa called COMBENASION and played numerous gigs and festivals in Pietermaritzburg South Africa. He now plays his kind of music which according to him is more percussive, reminding him of his roots, with elements of jazz and funk. ‘My music has this looking inward flavour as well as the modern sounds, but more importantly I try to look inward, to tap into my culture and the sounds that characterize my growing up.’ His influences are: Cannonball Adderley, Charlie Parker, Maeceo Parker, Fela Kuti, Abdullah Ibrahim, Winston ‘Mankunku’ Ngozi, Hugh Masekela, Robby Jansen, Miles Davis and a host of many other musicians.

These songs were recorded mainly so I wouldn't lose them. One take per song complete with mistakes. I don't know how many songs I've written. If you'd like to record any of them let me know. If you'd like to collaborate on writing let me know. You can reach me through My Feedback Page.

If you are interested in getting addiction help for yourself or someone you know I have a mountain of resources at my website. I've spent a considerable amount of time subservient to heroin so I have personal experience in the area.

I also have a Forum, and I was thinking if people want to introduce themselves and link to their music I think that'd be okay.

A guitarist, keyboardist, and musical composer with over 45 years of experience, Greg has been interested in music virtually all his life, from church and school choirs as early as first grade to school drum lessons starting in the fourth grade. He began his relationship with the guitar around the age of 8, when discovering his father's acoustic guitar hanging in the garage on a string and a nail. Dad's frustration had become Greg's fascination as he would sneak it down and begin mimicking some of the musicians he'd seen and heard on TV and radio. After breaking all but two strings, yet still trying to play "Louie, Louie" on it, Dad thought it might be worthwhile to get Greg some lessons. Soon Greg was backing up his church group and performed in his first school concert in the sixth grade with "My Sweet Lord". Another classmate of his had a Stratocaster and turned Greg on to lead guitar ... which has been his fascination ever since.

In High school, Greg became involved with the Jazz band. He began exploring the piano and formed his first band Stained Glass which performed 50's and 60's covers, as well as, some of the newer rock and soul music of the 70's!. Greg also joined the city sponsored musical/theatrical group 'Minnesingers' in which he participated in all aspects of the group (singing, dancing, and stage band). The highlight of this experience was performing at the World's Fair in Spokane, Washington.

Right out of high school Greg joined the Marine Corps. While in the service, he was involved with two bands Paradawn (Rock) and Freestyle (Disco/Classic Rock) both enjoyed some success at the local bases. After leaving the Marine Corps, Greg took a 4 year hiatus. During this time Greg dabbled with his new found love of fusion guitar and, shortly after, began learning the art of music sequencing. He began working on a solo project when he received a call from a drummer friend to help put together the San Jose radio station KOME band 'The Blazers'. The morning DJ's at KOME thought it would be a cool idea to get a band together to back up some of their rock and roll guests, however, their intention was more of a radio gimmick than a serious effort. With Greg's leadership and the luck of the quality musicianship that had been tossed together, what started with 2 rehearsals and a great first show with Greg Kihn, evolved into a 5 year run backing musical greats such as The Doobie Brothers, Steve Vai, Robin Trower, Pat Travers, Rick Derringer, Eddie Money, Peter Frampton, Keith Emerson, Ronnie Montrose, Night Ranger, Damn Yankees, Mr. Big, Tesla, The Smithereens, and many others!

Following the fun of the past 5 years, upon the demise of KOME, (thanks Howard Stern) Greg help form Hotel California: A Salute to the EAGLES, with the desire to reproduce the songs from the band that we have all grown up with - as lead guitarist, keyboardist, and background vocalist for Hotel California Greg expressed his love for this project by executing every nuance of the Eagles' music with incredible accuracy. His 5 year run with Hotel California culminated in an awesome 4th of July performance up in Calistoga complete with fireworks!

During his KOME days, he met up with multi talented musician/composer, Pete Lacey, which was the beginning of a collaboration that, to this day, sparks great interest in both of them and their friends/fans.

There's something about the musical creative process that seems to come alive as you play long into the night. "I knew it wasn't just me who experienced this...Pete also found this to be true...so we set out to experience this journey together, which evolved into some very cool music - a journey we now call LMNOP. (Lacey-Mullins Nocturnal Obsession Project)"

My thought on music has been influenced by the understanding Mozart had to tell his student. I have phrased that 'the key to learning music, is allowing life's melodies to speak to you'.

Some quotes from the book: Mozart, the man and the artist revealed in his own words. Compiled By Friedrich Kerst, Translated and edited by Henry Krehbiel.
Here, here and here [pointing to his ear, his head and his heart] is your school. If everything is right there, then take your pen and down with it; afterward ask the opinion of a man who knows his business to a musically talented boy who asked Mozart how one might learn to compose (pg. 5).
Melody is the essence of music. I compare a good melodist to a fine racer, counterpointists to hack post-horses; therefore be advised, let well alone and remember the old Italian proverb: -who knows most, knows least (pg.7).

I came across a great quote from the Jewish compser Ervine Nyiregyhazi, found in a letter to his lover;
'I am master of my passions to some extent... and yet I am torn by desires, asperations, conflicts, memories, all playing the melody of life on the strings of my heart' (pg.13)

I am a musician based out of the great state of Oklahoma in the mid-western area of the United States of America. I have had the opportunity to see bands grow such as The All American Rejects (AAR), as well as Other Lives - a band developed from one of the passionate AAR members. These have been two bands who I have learned from, and has allowed me to also see you can do what ever you want to do when it comes to music. I have played in a few bands, and it seems I was always the drummer but the people would always be great musicians who were looking for mainly people to contribute to their recording of their songs and just needed a session musician who could do the job to promote their talent to record companies such as Capitol Records.
My inspiration comes from something within me. Igor Stravinsky said 'I had my ear to help me; I heard and I wrote what I heard. I am the vessel through which Le Sacre passed' - quoted from the book; Hearing and Writing music, by : Ron Gorow - . This is what I have, and have come across a few people who have the same inspiration musically. I am someone who wakes up with melodies, and my mind articulates various ensembles during the day. It seems my only lack rests in being able to write what I hear. What I have posted is my process of learning to understand sound, and learning how to structure my ideas in music. I will eventually have a web site with postings of pieces I wrote for various instruments and different ensembles, as well as piano music I have recently written (the scores will be available).
