The mission of the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music (SFFCM) is to make chamber music a vital part of the cultural life of the San Francisco Bay Area by increasing audiences and support for chamber music activity – performance, education, and career development.
Our goals are:
- to provide assistance in the form of fiscal sponsorship, funding, workshops, resources and services to established and emerging professional chamber ensembles, and individuals or unincorporated organizations with chamber music related projects. The Affiliate Program, The Musical Grant Program.
- to build new audiences for chamber music, and showcase the diversity of chamber music in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area. Chamber Music Day - Live + Free.
- to create chamber music education opportunities for a wide range of players that both encourages life-long participation and builds new audiences for the art form. Chamber Music Encounters.
- to collaborate and foster partnerships with Bay Area and national music organizations, schools, and presenters
- to provide a comprehensive website that serves our programs, events and the general public through its information and resources Calendar.

Having celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2006, THE ALEXANDER STRING QUARTET has performed in the major music capitals of four continents, securing its standing among the world’s premier ensembles. Widely admired for its interpretations of Beethoven, Mozart, and Shostakovich, the Quartet has also established itself as an important advocate of new music through over 25 commissions and numerous premiere performances. In 1999 BMG Classics released the Quartet’s nine-CD set of the Beethoven cycle on its Arte Nova label to tremendous critical acclaim. The FoghornClassics label released a three-CD set (Homage) of the Mozart quartets dedicated to Haydn in 2004. FoghornClassics recently released the completion of a six-CD album (Fragments Vol. 1 & 2) of the complete Shostakovich quartets, and a recording of the complete quartets of Pulitzer prize-winning San Francisco composer, Wayne Peterson, is forthcoming in the fall of 2007.
